James Bond star Daniel Craig is in negotiations to take the lead role in upcoming adventure film Cowboys and Aliens.
Robert Downey Jr had been set to star as a former sharpshooter in the Dreamworks project but pulled out last week due to scheduling conflicts.
Iron Man director Jon Favreau is helming the movie and according to the Hollywood Reporter, is in early talks with Craig to step into Downey Jr's shoes.
Based on a graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, Cowboys and Aliens tells of an Old West battle between Apache Indians and western settlers, including gunslinger Jake Johnson (Craig, potentially), which is interrupted by the crash landing of an alien spaceship near Silver City, Arizona.
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing, having co-written the script with Damon Lindelof, with Dreamworks keen to begin production this year in line for a 2011 release.
While Craig has not officially accepted the role, the Casino Royale star has a longstanding relationship with Dreamworks, having starred in Munich and Road to Perdition for the studio.
He may also have room in his schedule to take on Cowboys and Aliens as the starting date of the 23rd Bond film - to be directed by Sam Mendes - remains uncertain while MGM's financial future is decided.
