Italy's movie goers have given a record breaking welcome to The Da Vinci Code, flocking to see the film in the Roman Catholic country's theatres.
The movie took takings on its open night of £1.36 million, nearly double the takings of the Oscar-winning Italian film "Life is Beautiful".
Italian movie goers reportedly lined the streets to queue for tickets for the film that had the Vatican call for a boycott. The film is an adaptation of a book by Dan Brown that claims that Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene and the Catholic Church tried to cover this up.
Millions of people are expected to flock to theatres to watch The Da Vinci Code as it opens in theatres around the world this weekend.
This is despite the film's cold reviews from movie critics when it premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival.
Critics claimed the movie does not live up to the hype and controversy which surrounded the film.
"A pulpy page-turner in its original incarnation as a huge international best-seller has become a stodgy, grim thing in the exceedingly literal-minded film version of The Da Vinci Code," said Variety critic Todd McCarthy.
