Filmmaker siblings Joel and Ethan Coen are to remake Oscar-winning film True Grit, it has been announced.

The 1969 western won leading man John Wayne a best actor Academy award for his portrayal of one-eyed lawman Rooster J Cogburn and told of a 14-year-old girl's attempt to track down her father's killer.

But while Henry Hathaway's original film focused on Cogburn, the Coens plan to remain more faithful to the source novel, written by Charles Portis in 1968.

According to Variety, the No Country For Old Men team will tell their story through the teenage girl's - originally played by Kim Darby - eyes.

Glen Campbell starred as a young Texas Ranger in the original film, which saw Jeff Corey as the villain of the piece and Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper as fellow criminals.

While the Coens were scheduled to adapt Michael Chabon's novel The Yiddish Policemen's Union, their take on True Grit will now take precedence, it has been confirmed.

The Oscar-winning pair recently completed work on A Serious Man, a dark comedy set in the late 60s.
