Star Trek actor Chris Pine is to become the latest star to portray fictional CIA analyst Jack Ryan, it has been announced.
The Tom Clancy character was last seen on screen in 2002's The Sum of All Fears, with Ben Affleck in the lead role, while Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October) and Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) have also played Ryan.
It has now been confirmed that Pine, who made his big screen breakthrough as the young James T Kirk in JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot this summer, is in final negotiations with Paramount Pictures to take on the role.
Produced by Mace Neufeld and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the new Jack Ryan film is based on a script by Hossein Amini, though no director is yet attached.
While the espionage thriller's plot is still unknown, the Hollywood Reporter claims the film will feature Ryan's exploits "at an earlier point in his career".
Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman confirmed Pine's involvement in the project, telling Variety: "Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan. With Chris in this role, we've taken our first step in creating a reboot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise."
Pine is also in talks to star in counterfeiting drama The Art of Making Money, to be directed by Disturbia helmer DJ Caruso, for Paramount.
