British director Gurinder Chadha has been announced as the director of the film version of Dallas.
Known for directing the hit movies Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice, as well as a number of award winning documentaries, Chadha has also been linked to the remake of I Dream of Jeannie.
Dallas was broadcast between 1978 and 1991 in the US and UK, and follows the "soapy, backstabbing machinations of Dallas oil magnate J.R. Ewing and his family".
John Travolta has been confirmed for the role of J.R. Ewing and Shirley MacLaine will play Miss Ellie.
Chadha told the BBC that the film will be true to the original series but will be set in present time.
"It's fantastic that so many people in Britain are excited about it," she said. "I've got to deliver something to them that's contemporary but at the same time doesn't trample on their nostalgic dreams."
The film is due for release in 2007.
