actor and comedian Bernie Mac has died at the age of 50.
The Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor was admitted to hospital last week and died early this morning due to complications arising from pneumonia, his publicist Danica Smith confirmed.
The Ocean's 11 star suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease, but his condition was reported to have gone into remission in 2005.
Mac drew critical and popular acclaim with his television series The Bernie Mac Show which aired more than 100 episodes between 2001 and 2006.
The show earned Mac a Peabody Award in 2002 as well as Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
In 2007, the comedian told David Letterman on his Late Show that he planned to retire soon.
"I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit. I missed a lot of things, you know," he told the chat show host.
Mac is best known to UK audiences for his recent film roles which included turns in Transformers and Guess Who? alongside Ashton Kutcher.
