Aardman Animations, the company behind the Wallace and Gromit franchise, could drop a film trailer after it attracted criticism.
The clip for its film The Pirates showed a man's arm falling off after he said he was on board a leper ship, reports the Harwich and Manningtree Standard.
Colchester-based leprosy charity Lepra said that it had received hundreds of complaints from sufferers of the disease and was demanding an apology from the filmmakers.
Writing on Twitter, the screenplay's author, Gideon Defoe, said that they were looking at changing the trailer, although he maintained that the studio had thought that the scene was not believable.
Lepra expressed its delight at the news, saying that the clip "reinforces the misconceptions, which lead to stigma and discrimination preventing people from coming forward for treatment".
The charity was founded in 1924 by Sir Leonard Rodgers and now works in some of the most deprived areas around the world.
