TV quiz host Chris Tarrant cautioned by police for assault over claims he threw cutlery at fellow curry house diner
Chris Tarrant has been cautioned by police following allegations that he threw cutlery at a fellow diner during an incident at a Nottingham curry house.
The 60-year-old TV presenter was officially cautioned for common assault yesterday over the incident which took place at the MemSaab restaurant earlier this month.
Detectives have now closed the case against Tarrant, who said following his caution that he had been merely taking part in "a bit of amiable horseplay".
Tarrant was arrested in his hotel room by police on May 13th over the matter.
Speaking to Sky News at the time the Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? host admitted that he did jokingly "lob" some cutlery on to the table of a couple at the curry house after requesting that they leave him in peace to continue a work discussion he was having with two colleagues.
But he dismissed as "utter nonsense" claims that he assaulted electrician John Trussler by throwing a knife at him.
Tarrant's fellow diner, who was celebrating his 36th birthday with his girlfriend at the restaurant, alleged that he had been left with a gash on his right arm as a result.
However reports suggest that police decided to settle the dispute by cautioning Tarrant after pathologists apparently concluded that the wound of his alleged victim could not have been caused by the quiz show frontman.
Welcoming the resolution of the matter yesterday, Tarrant said: "I am very pleased that the police have handled the matter so efficiently, recognising that there was never any malice on my part, just a bit of amiable horseplay.
"I am glad that no charge has been brought against me and I can now put this over-inflated affair behind me," he added.
