As well as affecting millions of travellers, the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland that has seen European flights grounded since last week has affected the entertainment industry.
The London premiere of teen actress Miley Cyrus' new film has been cancelled, with its cast and crew unable to fly from the US, while Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles looks likely to miss his breakfast show due to the ash cloud.
Moyles' Radio 1 colleague Scott Mills replaced the presenter on Monday's breakfast programme and could continue tomorrow if Moyles' "very, very surreal [but] kind of pleasant nightmare" of being stranded in the US continues.
"It started to become apparent to us on Thursday that actually it was worse than we thought," he told Radio 1's Sunday Surgery show.
"It's now like I live here - we've run out of pants and socks, I've run out of deodorant.
"I'm going to have to get my pants and socks laundered at the hotel."
Moyles added that satellite radio station Sirius Radio "have studios in New York, so I'm going to see if I can get a studio and work and still do the show".
Flights have been grounded in and out of Europe for five days while Royal Navy ships are being drafted in to aid stranded travellers.
