Five films will contest the best animated feature award at the 2010 Oscars after a record 20 movies were submitted for consideration, it has been confirmed.
The best animated feature category traditionally features three films, with Disney/Pixar's Wall-E winning the Oscar this year, ahead of Bolt and Kung-Fu Panda.
At least 16 eligible films must be submitted for consideration if the Academy is to expand the category, with the award only contested between five films on one previous occasion since the best animated feature Oscar's 2002 inception.
Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away won the award on that occasion, after 17 films were submitted for consideration.
This year's 20 submissions include box office smashes Up and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, dark animations Coraline and 9 and upcoming Disney effort The Princess and the Frog.
The 20 films submitted for consideration for the 2010 best animated feature Oscar are:
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel
