By Lewis Bazley.

Former X Factor contestants John and Edward Grimes - better known as Jedward - have said their time on the talent show helped hone their unique talents.

The Irish teenagers finished fifth in the competition thanks to their outlandish song-and-dance routines and outlasted stronger singers to the chagrin of head judge Simon Cowell, who repeatedly criticised the duo.

"Simon Cowell's permanently damaged us!," joked Edward as the twins prepared to launch their new single, having been dropped by Sony after landing a number two hit with their cover of Under Pressure.

Speaking to inthenews.co.uk, John explained the pair had surpassed expectations on The X Factor "because we did so many different things on the show, everything we did was really different".

"It was a massive learning experience for us because we'd never done anything like it, everyone else had previous experience," he added.

Edward remarked: "We were learning everything in front of the public - songs, how to perform, how to hold a microphone."

Having reached the later stages of the X Factor, the teens said they were always more surprised than upset at the media reaction and boos from the ITV1 show's live audience.

"It was just kind of random to see an old man booing you," said Edward, with his brother John adding: "Yeah, just to see someone else's family, or lots of randomers [sic] booing you, it was just like 'whatever'."

As well as a number two single, a sold-out Irish tour and a new single and album with Universal, Jedward also told inthenews.co.uk they had some unique mementos from The X Factor.

Edward explained: "I saw Cheryl Cole's new advert on YouTube, the L'Oreal lipgloss one, and it's really cool because I remember the judges always have a glass of water and she always used to have a bit of lipstick on her glass, and I drank out of it the next day. After the show, the next morning."

John added: "Simon used to have a pen that he'd always fiddle with - I have his pen. It's all chewed on top."

Jedward's new single All the Small Things and album Planet Jedward are released on July 26th.

  • "Thanks for the lovely interview Lewis Bazley, especially for NOT asking about hair, hightops and all the silly stuff everybody else is asking ad nauseum. The usual one dimensional portrayal of the twins is getting really stale, nice to read something different. "
