England fell just two runs short of Sri Lanka's 163 all out in the Twenty20 international at the Rose Bowl.
Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick were the outstanding individual performers but Sri Lankan resilience continued to be the theme of the summer.
England looked on course to power past Sri Lanka's total but they were pegged back in the dying overs.
Collingwood was the surprise star of the England bowling attack sensationally securing the best figures in the short history of Twenty20 internationals.
His gentle medium pace deliveries bamboozled the Sri Lankans to give Collinwood dream figures of 4-22.
Sanath Jayasuriya made a good 41 runs as the tourists got off to a brilliant start in their twenty overs.
They could not maintain their fine start however as Collingwood sparked a collapse after taking the wickets of the openers Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga who bagged 34.
England came out to reply in positive mood with Andrew Strauss replacing the injured Ed Joyce at the top of the innings.
He smashed four fours in successive balls while Trescothick played more carefully at the other end.
Strauss fell for 33 and Pietersen made a quick 17, while Trescothick continued to play commandingly at the other end on his way to a 72.
He batted through to the 18th over but could not quite finish the job as England fell agonisingly two runs short.
