Elvis Presley's 1959 hit, One Night, has become the 1,000th song to top the UK singles charts.

It comes nearly 53 years after Al Martino's Here in My Heart became the UK's very first number one, in November 1952.

One Night replaced another Elvis re-release, Jailhouse Rock, at the top of the chart giving Elvis his 20th UK number one.

SonyBMG, owners of Elvis's back-catalogue, will re-release a further 18 of his number ones over the next few months as the 50-year copyright protection on sound recordings expirers on his earlier hits.

One Night sold more copies than two new releases - Empty Souls by the Manic Street Preachers, and Somebody Told Me by the Killers.
