France's Amelie Mauresmo has reached the third round of the French Open at Roland Garros after a 6-1 7-6 (7-5) win over Russia's Vera Dushevina.
The world number one powered past her opponent in the first set but was given a much tougher workout in the second set.
Mauresmo, who made 51 unforced errors, sat 5-3 down in the second set and was faced with set points at 5-4 and 6-5 before battling back to force a tie-break and gain the win.
The 26-year-old will now face Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who beat another Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 2-6 6-4 6-1.
Joining her in the third round is Maria Sharapova, who despite struggling with the injury she picked up against Mashona Washington on Sunday, beat Czech Iveta Benesova 6-4 6-1.
In a tense first set, the pair traded breaks early on before rain interrupted play at 3-2 Sharapova.
However, the fourth seed never looked back from there and closed out the first set before racing away with the second to set up a clash with either Australian Alicia Molik or Romania's Anda Perianu.
Compatriot Dinara Safina is also through after a comfortable 6-0 6-2 victory over Hana Sromova.
She clinched the first set inside 23 minutes and while she was made to work harder in the second set, Safina will now play Katarina Srebotnik in the third round.
