New York quartet the Drums have been named in fifth place in the BBC's Sound of 2010 shortlist, it has been revealed.
The list highlights the artists predicted to make a splash in the coming year, with previous winners including Little Boots, Adele and Mika.
A panel of 165 UK-based "tastemakers" voted for the bands on the list, intended to comprise "the best rising music stars" who are "new to the British public".
A 15-strong longlist was revealed at the start of December, with Welsh pop singer Ellie Goulding and singer-songwriter Marina and the Diamonds included on the list.
Brooklyn four-piece the Drums have been named in fifth place on the shortlist, with the other acts in the top five to be announced in reverse order every day this week.
NME editor Krissi Murison, part of the panel of "tastemakers", said the Drums feel "instantly classic".
"I always think it's amazing when you hear a band for the first time and you already think, 'Wow I feel like I've lived with this song my entire life', because it sounds so big and awesome already," she told BBC 6Music.
The band's Summertime EP was released in September, with their debut album due for release next summer.
"The 50s, 60s influences came from moving from New York to Florida, sunny vacation-land Florida, in the dead of winter," said the band's singer Jonathan Pierce of their EP.
"It was really warm and vacation-like, and we just started listening to girl groups from the 1960s, the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes and all that. It infused its way into the sound in a pretty organic way."
