Arsene Wenger has urged Robin Van Persie to sign a new contract with Arsenal.
The Gunners boss wants the Dutchman to follow Theo Walcott, who has agreed a contract extension.
Van Persie had stated that Arsenal had to win a trophy this season to end their four-year barren spell. But the north London club were this week knocked out of the Champions League, their remaining hope of silverware this season.
But Wenger said the 25-year-old, who is the club's leading goal-scorer, should repay the faith the club has shown in him.
"I am hoping he will sign a new deal and I am trying very hard to get him to sign. I want Robin on board," the Frenchman said.
"He is a very important player in the squad and on the pitch he is a very efficient player.
"We want him to stay because we gave him a chance when he was in a very bad position at Feyenoord.
"I think he developed well here and I don't see a reason for him to go and he loves the club."
Reports claimed the Dutchman turned down the club's £65,000-a-week offer, before talks were postponed until the end of the season.
Van Persie has scored 18 goals this season despite a spell out through injury.
