Tommy Spurr scored a late equaliser for Sheffield Wednesday to help them move out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw against Plymouth Argyle.

Wednesday have now drawn their last seven consecutive matches but have renewed hope of surviving the drop after moving ahead of Leicester City and Coventry.

Argyle had looked to be boosting their outside chance of gaining a playoff spot when Peter Halmosi gave them the lead inside two minutes.

But the south coast side may now have to settle for a mid table finish after they were unable to hold on against Wednesday.

Halmosi broke the deadlock early on when his free-kick took a massive deflection off Deon Burton leaving Owls goalkeeper Lee Grant with no chance of stopping the shot.

Burton had the chance to atone for the deflection ten minutes later but could only push his shot wide of the Argyle goal.

Wednesday were dominating territory but were being let down by their final ball into the box, meaning strikers Burton and Ben Sahar had little to feed off.

At the start of the second half Jermaine Easter nearly doubled the Pilgrims' lead but Grant produced a good save to deny him.

That jolted the Owls into life and they began to pressurise the Argyle goal on a consistent basis.

The best chance fell to Burton whose goal-bound header was brilliantly saved by Luke McCormick in the Pilgrims' goal.

With ten minutes remaining the Owls' dominance was rewarded when a half-cleared free-kick fell to Spurr on the edge of the area and he blasted a volley past McCormick.

Wednesday face Blackpool, who are one point above them, on Saturday before a vital trip to Leicester the week after.
