Manchester City manager Mark Hughes was left disappointed after his team's sixth consecutive Premier League draw at Anfield.

Martin Skrtel gave Liverpool the lead early in the second-half, however goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland turned the match on it head.

City couldn't hold their lead for long though with Yossi Benayoun grabbing an equaliser after David Ngog's shot had been deflected across the six-yard area.

The City manager believes his side should have won the game though and highlighted his team's poor defending.

"I think if we'd have defended correctly we could have seen the game out comfortably because Liverpool weren't causing us too many problems," said Hughes.

"We were in a winning position again and that is the frustrating thing for us at the moment that we are allowing those winning situations to get away from us.

"We are disappointed because we were the better team today and we showed great character to come back from a goal behind," he added.

Hughes' counterpart Rafael Benitez was also disappointed with the result but praised his team's character.

"We are a little bit disappointed because we had chances at the end," said Benitez.

"You could see today the character of the team and in the circumstances I think it was a very good performance."

Despite Hughes' frustration, he still believes the result marks a progression for his newly assembled team.

"We've come to Anfield, scored two goals, got a draw and we're disappointed so maybe that shows how far we've come," said Hughes.

"As the season progresses maybe we'll look back on this and see it as a point gained."
