Graham Dott needs just three more frames in the evening session to claim the World Championship title, after taking a 15-7 lead over Peter Ebdon.
Ebdon played better today but still lost 4-2 in the session, as Dott proved more adept at taking his chances.
Englishman Ebdon hit a 78 break in the day's second frame to reply to Dott's win in the opening frame, courtesy of a 56 break.
But Ebdon's problems yesterday returned in the 19th frame, when he missed a back having made a 35 break, but he managed to rescue the frame.
Dott took a scratchy next frame with a fluked snooker to take a 13-7 lead, and it seemed to give the wiry Scotsman the psychological edge.
Dott won the close final two frames of the session to go into this evening's session needing just three frames for the title.
The 28-year-old has had to live with being in the shadows of fellow Scots Stephen Hendry, John Higgins - his recent practice partner - and, to a lesser degree, Stephen Maguire.
But the Rangers fan needs to win only three more frames during the evening session to triumph after opening up a 15-7 advantage over the 2002 world champion.
Ebdon had history was against him from the start of the second day as no player has triumphed after being 11-5 down overnight.
