A soldier from the Royal Military police has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The soldier was killed as a result of an explosion that happened during a foot patrol near to Gereshk District in central Helmand province this morning.
Spokesman for Taskforce Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "It is my sad duty to confirm the death of a soldier, a Royal Military policeman, in an explosion earlier today in Helmand province.
"He died doing his duty and we will remember him."
The soldier's next of kin have been informed. His death takes the number of UK troops killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 222.
