Germany were held to a draw by Cyprus as they failed to increase their lead in group D of the Euro 2008 qualifying stages, a result that gives renewed hope to Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
Chelsea's Michael Ballack gave Germany the lead after only 15 minutes with a 20 yard strike and the away side looked like they would then go on to secure the win only to be pegged back.
Yiannis Okkas scored for the Cypriots against the run of play two minutes before the break and they then managed to keep the Germans at bay in the second half to secure a historic draw. It was the first time Cyprus had even scored against their mighty opponents.
The draw means that Wales and the Republic of Ireland are now back within touching distance of the group leaders.
The rest of the night's action was from group A where Poland and Finland both picked up victories.
Finland, managed by Englishman Roy Hodgson, currently top the group after beating Armenia 1-0. Mika Nurmela headed them into the lead after Jonatan Johansson's cross. Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen then did the rest to keep the home side in front.
Meanwhile Poland beat Belgium 1-0 to boost their chances of qualification with Radoslaw Matusiak scoring the only goal of the game having robbed defender Daniel Van Buyten of the and slotting past the goalkeeper.
