Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is to undergo surgery on his pelvis and both wrists today following his motorcycle crash yesterday.
The 36-year-old Italian was seriously injured after crashing into a Ford Fiesta at a crossroads in Walthamstow, east London, and was immediately airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
Cudicini has since been moved to a private hospital and Spurs have confirmed the player, who was signed from Chelsea on a free transfer in January, will be operated on today.
"We have leading specialists looking after Carlo and once surgery is complete and his recovery is underway, we will have a clearer idea of how many weeks he will be out for," said head of medical services Wayne Diesel.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said: "We are all sorry to hear about what has happened to Carlo. We are just relieved that the injuries he sustained in the accident weren't more serious.
"Everyone at the club sends their best wishes and we hope that he recovers soon."¿¿
Since Cudicini's accident, several commentators have pointed to the fact that the goalkeeper may be held in breach of his contract for riding a 1100cc BMW motorbike.
Part of the standard Premier League contract restricts players from partaking in activities deemed overtly dangerous, including skydiving, bungee jumping and skiing.
