The high street chain WH Smith has apologised after a book about the Austrian rapist Josef Fritzl was promoted as a Father's Day present.
The book about the father who kept his daughter imprisoned in an underground dungeon for 24 years was advertised in a Lewisham store, in south-east London, as one of "Top 50 Books for Dad".
A spokeswoman for WH Smith has since apologised for the placement of the book, titled The Crimes of Josef Fritzl, claiming it was "a mistake by one store".
She added: "It is not national policy. We will rectify this immediately."
Fritzl was imprisoned indefinitely earlier this year after being found guilty of imprisoning his daughter Elisabeth for almost a quarter of a century and fathering seven children with her.
The 73-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment at a psychiatric hospital back in March after also admitting murdering one of the children after neglect on his behalf resulted in the death of the child shortly after it was born.
