A 16-year-old girl is in a serious condition in hospital after falling from a balcony while on a trip to Venice.

The teenager was in the canal city as part of a trip with 40 other students from her school and was staying in a hotel at the city's Lido district when the accident happened. The girl is a student from the Emanuel School in Battersea, south London.

The as-yet unidentified schoolgirl fell from a balcony and landed on a canopy before falling to the ground.
