Two US diplomats have arrived in Burma for fresh meetings with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Assistant secretary of state Kurt Campbell and deputy Scot Marciel are set to meet with the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate tomorrow as well as members of the ruling junta.

The US has initiated a new approach to the military junta in Burma since Barack Obama came to office.

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton previously announced the Obama administration would attempt to directly engage with the military leaders without abandoning existing sanctions.

The international community has continually criticised the detention of Suu Kyi. The 64-year-old has been subjected to house arrest for around 14 of the past 20 years.

Earlier this year she was sentenced to a further 18 months after American John Yettaw swam uninvited to her home in Yangon.

Mr Campbell is the highest ranking US official to visit Burma since 1995.
