A uniformed police officer was shot in the chest after he pulled over a car in Dublin's financial district.

The regional traffic unit cop suffered bullet wounds after two men in a car opened fire at him on Ossory Road today morning.

Sergeant Gerry Curley said: "A uniformed member of An Garda Siochana was shot this morning shortly after 09:00 BST while on duty.

"A passenger got out of the car and shot the member at close range.

"He has been taken to the Mater hospital, where his condition is described as stable," the spokesman added.

The men drove away from the scene of the shooting after the incident and abandoned the vehicle nearby. Media sources claim that the armed assailants then used a white van to make their getaway.
