A police officer responding to an emergency call has died from injuries sustained in a road accident in Manchester last night.
PC Christopher Hart, 40, was driving a police van when it collided with a Volkswagen Polo at the junction between Pottery Lane and Ashton Old Road in Openshaw at 23:55 GMT last night.
The police vehicle overturned and came to a halt against a set of traffic lights. PC Hart suffered serious head injuries as a result of the crash and died at the scene.
A male police officer, who was also travelling in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary and was later released.
The three passengers in the Polo also suffered minor injuries in the incident and were also taken to hospital to receive treatment.
Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran said: "This is a tragic incident in which a serving officer with Greater Manchester police has lost his life.
"Our thoughts are now with his family and colleagues and we are offering them every support."
Chief Superintendent Jon Rush, Bury divisional commander, added: "Chris was a respected member of Bury division and his tragic and sudden death will be deeply felt by his family, particularly his young son, and his work colleagues."
Investigators are still searching the scene for clues and police have appealed for witnesses as they seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
