A 36-year-old police officer died this morning after being stabbed in Luton town centre.
Jonathan Charles Henry responded to a call to deal with a man in possession of a knife in George Street, Luton, at 07:18 BST.
Despite wearing a stab proof vest he was fatally struck and died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Another man is in a serious but stable condition in Luton and Dunstable hospital.
Officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion or murder; he is also being treated in hospital.
PC Henry leaves behind a wife, Mary, and baby daughter, Maggie. His family are said to be "very distraught" and finding events difficult to comprehend.
Chief Constable Gillian Parker of Bedforshire police said this afternoon that colleagues who attended the scene are "still traumatised" and that the wider police family is "saddened" by this morning's events.
"Jon loved his job and was a dedicated member of the police service," she added.
"His dedication to duty cost him his life and leaves Bedfordshire police sad at his death but proud he was one of us."
Speaking in the House of Commons this afternoon the home secretary John Reid said that PC Henry's death "highlights the dangers police officers face day-to-day in their task of protecting the public".
