Police in south Wales are investigating the rape of two women on the same day at the University of Glamorgan.

South Wales police have confirmed that inquiries have begun into the rape of a 20-year-old woman on Saturday at one of the university's halls of residence.

A separate incident saw an 18-year-old woman raped at the university on the same day.

Police claim there is no evidence to suggest the same person is responsible.

Police Superintendent Tony Smith said officers carrying out high-visibility patrols at the university on Monday evening were approached by a 20-year-old student who reported she had been raped by two men in the early hours of Saturday 26th September.

The incident is said to have occurred at the Glamorgan Court Halls of Residence and police have asked for any witnesses who may have heard or seen anything suspicious, or saw two or three men with a 20-year-old female in the area, to contact them.

Since September 26th there has been a 24-hour police presence on the university's campus and dedicated helpline has been set up.

Police were first called to the halls of residence after receiving a report that a non-residential student at the university had been sexually assaulted sometime between 02:30 BST and 04:50 BST on September 26th in a friend's room.

The suspect has been described as around 6ft tall, of solid appearance, and was wearing gloves and a dark-coloured hooded top.

Vice-chancellor of the university, Professor David Halton, urged anyone with any information to come forward.

"The safety and welfare of our staff and students is our priority and we have increased our campus security presence and have a dedicated counselling service available," he said.

"I would urge any member of our community who has any information to come forward to assist South Wales police with their enquiries.

"Staff and students should also follow personal safety advice and guidance provided by the university and the students union."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01443 743 678 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The dedicated helpline number for students is 01443 654 660.
