Hertfordshire police have identified the headless and handless body discovered in Ickleford on Friday evening as missing traveller John Finney.
Police said the 42-year-old, who was abducted from his Mitsubishi Shogun in Hertfordshire on 29 February, was the victim of a targeted attack.
His car was found abandoned at Park Farm, Northaw, Hertfordshire. The police said both areas are being searched and house-to-house enquiries are ongoing.
Det Ch Insp Bill Jephson said: "This was a targeted attack and while investigations to trace those responsible are well underway we are appealing for witnesses."
Detective Jephson added: "I would like to reassure the community of Ickleford this was not a random attack and that they should feel safe to continue their daily routine."
A post-mortem took place today, but police said the cause of death has not been established. Further forensic examinations are planned.
