Police have launched an investigation into the death of a cyclist in Kirkdale early on Sunday morning.
Merseyside detectives said they had come to the scene of the crime after a number of gunshots were heard in the area. When police arrived they found a man's body in an alleyway near Stanley.
Paramedics were called to the scene, but the victim died at the spot. A post-mortem is due to begin shortly to determine the cause of death.
Police have said they suspect the incident to be a targeted killing and have appealed for information to help capture those involved in the attack.
A spokesperson for the police said: "Crime scene investigators are carrying out forensic examinations at the scene and house-to-house inquiries are underway. High visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the local community."
Last year, the murder of young cyclist Rhys Jones and the reluctance of witnesses to come forward out of fear of gang-related violence raised concerns on Merseyside.
