A teenager who was shot dead near Brixton tube station on Friday was part of a group of ten other youths targeted by a lone gunman on a motorcycle, according to police.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan police said the victim was between 17 and 18 years of age and was in a residential cul-de-sac, Marcus Garvey Way, when the shooting took place.
The group was approached by a black male, about 18 years old, who was riding a blue motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet and spoke briefly to the group before opening fire.
Police are confirming the identity of the teenager. No other injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made.
The spokesman said Operation Trident officers, a specialist unit investigating gun crime among London's black community, are keeping an open mind as to the motive of the crime.
The street where the shooting took place remains cordoned off and forensic investigations are being carried out at the scene.
Operation Trident Detective Chief Inspector Adnan Qureshi said: "This is a tragic loss of another young life, and I would urge members of the community to assist us in bringing the person responsible to justice.
"I wish to offer my personal assurance to anyone with information, that anything that you come forward and tell police will be treated with the strictest of confidence."
Yesterday's death takes the total number of teenagers killed in gun-related murders in the capital this year to 17.
