Police are investigating reports of "four masked gunmen"
A 34-year-old man was shot dead in a Leeds takeaway late last night, police have said.

The incident took place in an Indian takeaway on Roundhay Road in the Harehills area of Leeds at around 23:30 BST last night.

After the man emerged from the takeaway he was attacked by four masked gunmen, Detective Superintendent Steve Payne of West Yorkshire policy told reporters this afternoon.

Fleeing into the takeaway, he jumped over the counter to seek refuge as the takeaway owner and a kitchen staff assistant exited into a secure store room.

The gunmen broke down a door connecting the public area of the takeaway with its kitchen and fired approximately four or five shots with what police believe to be a handgun. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det Supt Payne sought to reassure local residents by describing the incident as a "targeted attack". He emphasised that "incidents like this are extremely rare".

"This was a cold-blooded killing and we do need to catch the people responsible for this," he added.

"It would appear to me that these men were either laying in wait for him or had followed him from the takeaway, waited for him to leave the premises, and then decided to carry out the attack."

There were no other customers in the takeaway at the time of the incident, but Det Supt Payne appealed to members of the public to help police solve the crime.

"The answer to this offence lies in the community. Somebody knows the people who are responsible for this," he said.End of story
