Police are questioning a man over the 1992 murder of young mother Rachel Nickell.
The 23-year-old former model was sexually assaulted and stabbed 49 times during a frenzied attack on Wimbledon Common, where she was out walking with her two-year-old son.
Her killer has never been caught.
Press reports claim that the man being interviewed by police is understood to be serving a sentence at Broadmoor high security hospital in Berkshire.
Last night Scotland Yard confirmed that they were interviewing a 40-year-old man as part of an "ongoing inquiry" into Rachel's murder but declined to provide further details.
"Metropolitan police officers investigating the murder of 23-year-old Rachel Nickell on July 15th 1992 are interviewing a 40-year-old man today," a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
"The interview is part of an on-going inquiry into Rachel's murder," he added.
In 1994, west London resident Colin Stagg went on trial for the killing.
But the case was thrown out after it was revealed that an undercover policewoman had tried to persuade him to admit to the murder.
Mr Stagg, who has always denied carrying out the attack, told the Daily Mail that he was pleased to learn that police were questioning another man over the killing.
"It's about time. If he gets charged, hopefully things would start moving forward, not just for me, but for the Nickell family as well," said Mr Stagg.
"I'm still getting called a murderer."
