A 63-year-old man has today been charged with stabbing a police community support officer (CSO) on Monday.
Albert Williams, of Elizabeth Avenue in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, will appear at Tameside magistrates court tomorrow charged with the attempted murder of 47-year-old Gary Etchells.
Mr Etchells remains in hospital after sustaining stab injuries to his neck but his condition is said to be "improving".
The Greater Manchester police CSO underwent surgery following the attack on Monday morning, but has now been moved out of intensive care at Tameside general hospital.
Mr Etchells, from Glossop, Derbyshire, was not wearing a stab-proof vest when he was stabbed while attending a property to assist a housing association with an eviction.
He is married to Andie Etchells and has four sons aged nine, 19 and twins of 15.
Speaking yesterday, his wife said: "What can I say about Gary? He's a caring, generous and genuine man. If you don't like Gary, then there's something wrong with you.
"I was worried I was going to lose him yesterday but thank God he is improving today."
