A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of PC Keith Blakelock during the Broadwater Farm Riots in 1985.
PC Blakelock, himself 40, died when he tripped and was set upon by rioters in Tottenham, north London, who hacked him to death with machetes and sticks.
The Metropolitan police said the unnamed man was arrested in Suffolk last Friday.
Sources indicated that the arrest was "significant".
"The man, originally from Tottenham was taken to Bury St Edmunds police station where he was questioned," a statement added.
The arrest comes almost 25 years since PC Blakelock was murdered during the Broadwater Farm Riots, one of a number of violent race riots that punctuated the 1980s, on October 6th 1985.
PC Blakelock, PC Richard Coombes, who was also attacked, and ten colleagues were part of Met police unit serial 502 dispatched to help firefighters being attacked by up to 300 rioters after a fire was started at a newsagents near the Tangmere tower block.
PC Blakelock's attackers, wearing balaclavas and armed with machetes and sticks, attacked him when he tripped and fell.
The Met have insisted that despite Friday's arrest, anyone with any information over the murder of PC Blakelock of the attempted murder of PC Ricahrd Coombes can contact the incident room on 0208 733 4613.
In 1987 three men were convicted over the PC's murder, although their convictions were quashed four years later.
