An inquest into the death of a London barrister killed during a shootout with armed police has heard he was hit at least five times by police weapons.

The inquest into the death of family law barrister Mark Saunders, 32, began at Westminster's coroners' court this morning.

The inquest heard from the official who carried out the post mortem on Mr Saunders body.

It was confirmed that formal identification of the body was made by Mr Saunder's wife.

The barrister died of multiple gun shots after sustaining severe external and internal injury to the brain and liver.

It was also confirmed that Mr Saunders was struck at least five times by the police with more than one type of bullet.

Mr Saunders engaged the police in three separate gunfire exchanges in Markham Square off the Kings Road, south-west London on Tuesday.

Reports suggest police recovered the body of the QEB Chambers employee after stun grenades were fired into the property.

The inquest heard this morning that ambulance crews gave first aid to Mr Saunders on the scene but he was pronounced dead at 21:55 BST.

Forensic examinations are still taking place in the area around the Markham Square address and police are continuing to talk to neighbours.

A statement issued on behalf of the parents and sisters of Mr Saunders said: "Everyone who knew and loved Mark appreciated his warmth, generosity and sheer energy for life.

"He was a very talented and sociable person whose enthusiasm and charm touched so many people. We will always remember him as our caring, considerate and loving son and brother.

"We are devastated at our tragic loss and would like to be left alone to grieve at this time."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is undertaking an investigation into the shooting and is due to publish its final report in six months time.End of story
