Jersey police have today charged a 68-year-old man in connection with offences relating to the ongoing investigation into historical child abuse on the island.

Claude James Donnelly, of La Petite Routes des Mielles, St Brelade, has been charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault and one count of procuring an act of gross indecency.

The charges are not directly connected with the investigation at the Haut de la Garenne care home, police have confirmed.

Jersey police released a statement this evening alleging that Mr Donnelly raped a 12 year old girl at an address on Roseville Street, St Helier, between March 1971 and 1972.

Police claim he also indecently assaulted the girl at some stage between 1971 and 1974 on the island.

Between 1971 and 1974, Mr Donnelly is also accused of procuring the commission by the child, known as Witness A, of an act of gross indecency on him.

Mr Donnelly is due to appear before a local magistrates court to face the charges on Wednesday morning.

The police statement confirmed that Mr Donnelly has reserved his plea to all three charges and will be remanded in custody overnight.

Jersey has been the centre of an ongoing child abuse scandal with more than 100 people contacting the police on the channel island claiming they were abused at the former care home, Haut de la Garenne, since the 1960s.

One person has so far been charged in connection with the investigation; former warder Gordon Claude Wateridge.

He is next due to appear in court on May 12th charged with three offences of indecent assault on girls under 16 between 1969 and 1979.

Last week police said they had found bone fragments and two milk teeth at the former Jersey children's home.

The remains are currently being studied in the UK mainland to determine whether they belonged to a child or an animal.End of story
