The father of the missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann will meet US politicians in Washington today to discuss international programmes for missing children.
Gerry McCann will meet an aide of first lady Laura Bush as well as members of Congress who have recently worked on legislation related to missing children.
Madeleine was abducted from the McCann family's holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3rd.
Since then Mr McCann and his wife Kate have embarked on an extensive media campaign to publicise their daughter's disappearance.
Mr McCann will be visiting the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children while in Washington and he flew to the US capital with the couple's campaign manager with tickets donated by an airline.
Writing on his blog on the website findmadeleine.com, Mr McCann commented on media reports that he and his wife could face prosecution after dining "50 yards away" from their children and "checking on them regularly" the night Madeleine was abducted.
"We know that there has been criticism in some quarters of our actions but at the time, we felt our actions were responsible," Mr McCann said.
"We have been advised that legally our behaviour was well within the bounds of responsible parenting and subsequently been assured that no action will be taken.
"These types of criticism, particularly at this stage, as well as being hurtful are extremely unhelpful in the search for Madeleine. From the moment we discovered Madeleine missing Kate and I have done everything in our power to try and help get her back."
He added that the real criminal in the case of their missing daughter was person who abducted Madeleine which "wreaked havoc on our family and affected millions of other people".
