Garry Newlove killers to appeal sentences

Two of three youths convicted of killing father-of-three Garry Newlove last August granted right to appeal sentences
Two of the three youths convicted of killing Garry Newlove last August have been granted the right to appeal against their sentences.

Adam Swellings, 19, and Stephen Sorton, 17, were jailed for 17 and 15 years for father-of-three Mr Newlove's murder.

The court of appeal told inthenews.co.uk that Swellings, the gang's ringleader, is appealing against both his conviction and sentence.

Sorton meanwhile is appealing just the sentence.

A third youth – 16-year-old Jordan Cunliffe – convicted over Mr Newlove's murder has not lodged an appeal, the court added.

A spokesman explained that the case would not go to the court of appeal until at least August – 12 months after Mr Newlove's death.

He was kicked to death outside his home in Warrington while his wife Helen and their daughters watched on when he confronted a group of teenagers vandalising a car.

Speaking after the sentences were handed down earlier this year, Mrs Newlove called on her husband's killers to never be released.End of story
