A former Metropolitan police officer has been sentenced to ten months in prison after admitting credit card fraud involving tens of thousands of pounds.
Richard de Cadenet, 39, pleased guilty to misconduct in a public offence in July and was sentenced today at Southwark magistrates' court.
He was arrested as part of an Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation into alleged misuse of corporate American Express cards in October 2007.
In April 2008 he resigned from the Metropolitan police force after being charged.
The IPCC declared in a statement today: "While working as a Detective Sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Service, De Cadenet spent £73,669.18 for his personal use on an American Express credit card which was issued for use while on official business.
IPCC commissioner for London, Deborah Glass, added: "This was a serious misuse of the public's money.
"The taxpayers of London will rightly be concerned. I hope todays sentence reassures them that abuse of the system will not be tolerated. I commend the Metropolitan police for the vigour with which they are now dealing with this matter."
