Dissident republicans blamed for bombing off duty policeman

Off duty police officer seriously injured in car bomb attack
Dissident republican terrorists are believed to have been behind a booby trap car bomb that exploded last night leaving an off-duty catholic police officer seriously injured.

The under car device exploded in the west County Tyrone village of Spamount, outside Castlederg, Northern Ireland.

The police officer sustained serious leg injuries but his life was saved by a member of the public who dragged him from the wreckage.

British Army technical experts were rushed to the scene.

Derek Hussey, an Ulster Unionist councillor who was at the scene, praised the "actions and courage" of the man who pulled the officer from the car.

Meanwhile Shaun Woodward, the Northern Ireland Secretary, has condemned the attack.

"As Northern Ireland moves towards a new and better future, there remains a tiny minority of contemptible, criminal elements who have been rejected by the people, north and south," he said.

In November, the Real IRA shot two Catholic officers in Londonderry and Dungannon. Both survived. The attacks were carried out in protest at Sinn Fein's decision to support the police.
