A couple have been charged with neglect following the death of a seven-year-old girl in Birmingham.

West Midlands police released a statement today confirming that Khyra Ishaq, of Leyton Road, Handsworth, was taken to hospital on Saturday morning where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has yet to be confirmed, police claim.

Enquiries into the death have begun and Junaid Abuhamza, 29, and Angela Gordon, 33, have both been charged with neglect.

The couple, believed to be Khyra's mother and stepfather, appeared before Birmingham magistrates' court on Monday and have been remanded in custody before appearing again on May 28th.

The BBC quotes a Birmingham City Council spokesperson as saying: "We are deeply saddened by the death of this child and our sympathies go to the child's family and friends at this difficult time.

"This death is now the subject of a police inquiry and Birmingham City Council are fully supporting their investigation."End of story
