Oxford Street victim 'stabbed over spilt drink'

Police interview commuters after man stabbed to death in broad daylight on London's Oxford Street
A 22-year-old man stabbed to death in broad daylight on London's Oxford Street was murdered in a row over a drink, police have said.

The victim of yesterday's attack on the country's busiest shopping street has been named as Steven Bigby of north London.

Results of a post-mortem have not yet been received, but the Metropolitan police have said they are confident he died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Acting Deputy Chief Inspector Bob Mahoney said four men, described as black and aged between 20 and 30, fled the scene after the incident, which took place at 16:47 BST on Monday outside McDonald's.

He said the murder appeared to be the result of a "spontaneous incident".

"Two groups of black men came together. A drink was thrown. The incident escalated very quickly and Steven was fatally stabbed," DCI Mahoney told reporters.

"There is a possibility that the four men were walking up and down on Oxford Street during the afternoon. It is possible they may have been seen promenading."

Police are urgently appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have seen the four men being sought.End of story
