Fernando Alonso has set the pace for the US grand prix with the fastest qualifying lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The two-time world champion completed the Brickyard in one minute 11.925 seconds, putting him ahead of BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld and McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

The German finished in one minute 12.391 seconds, while championship leader Hamilton clocked in at one minute 12.628 seconds.

Rookie BMW driver Sebastian Vettel put in an impressive performance ahead of his F1 debut on Sunday while standing in for the injured Robert Kubica, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen the fifth fastest.

Hamilton leads Alonso in the drivers' championship by eight points, but McLaren boss Ron Dennis was forced to play down reports of a rift between the team's two drivers earlier this week.
