Nigel Clough has been announced as the new manager of Derby County.
Clough's father Brian, who died in 2004, won the old First Division title with the Rams in 1972.
However, club chairman Adam Pearson insists that appointing Clough to Pride Park was not a move based on sentiment.
"There was no sentiment or romance involved in the appointment, you can't have that in football," Pearson told BBC Radio Five Live.
"He's tough enough to take the club forward in his own style. The board were unanimous both on the American side and the football side."
Pearson continued: "He was our number one choice. The speed in which he took up the challenge was a delight for us and the negotiations went very smoothly."
He added: "We are delighted to have him on board. Nigel is right man for this club at this time, he has created a fine legacy at Burton and wants to do exactly the same at Derby. He sees it very much as a long-term project."
Clough played for Liverpool and Manchester City as a player before becoming a player-manager at Burton in 1998.
The 42-year-old led the Blue Square Premier club to the top of the league this season, with the Brewers on course to reach the Football League for the first time in history.
Former Derby boss Paul Jewell left Pride Park on December 28th and Clough takes charge with the club five points above the Championship relegation zone.
Caretaker boss Chris Hutchings will remain in charge for the club's clash with Manchester United in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-finals tomorrow night.
