The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has confirmed the script for the third Batman film promises to "finish our story".
Nolan revitalised the DC superhero with Batman Begins in 2005 before shattering box office records in 2008 with The Dark Knight, for which the late Heath Ledger won an Oscar.
Though his attention is currently focused on his next film, the upcoming crime thriller Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the Insomnia helmer gave some brief hints of the future for the Caped Crusader in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
"Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story," he told the paper.
"And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story."
Nolan's brother Jonathan is currently doing the "hard work" of completing the screenplay for the third film in the rebooted Batman franchise, after Christopher Nolan and David Goyer conceived a story.
"I'm very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we've done with the characters," the director added.
"My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don't go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful.
"Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we're telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That's what we do."
Nolan is also to act as a 'godfather' for the next film in the Superman franchise, serving as a producer and mentoring an as-yet-unnamed director who will take on the iconic superhero last seen in 2006's Superman Returns.
"A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways," Nolan commented.
"I only know the way that has worked for us that's what I know how to do."
He added a story idea from Goyer convinced him to become involved with Superman, saying: "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: 'That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting.'"
