Singer Cheryl Cole has confirmed she is to separate from her husband Ashley, her representatives have announced.
A statement from Supersonic PR said: "Cheryl Cole is separating from her husband Ashley Cole. Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time."
A spokeswoman for the PR agency added no further comment would be issued at this time.
The announcement came shortly after the X Factor judge arrived back in the UK following a trip to Los Angeles.
Speculation had been rife about the state of the marriage of the Girls Aloud singer and Chelsea and England footballer since recent tabloid claims that he sent text messages to other women and allegedly was adulterous to his wife while on away trips with his club.
Cheryl Cole, née Tweedy, and Ashley Cole, began dating in 2004 and were married in northwest London in July 2006, after the Girls Aloud's star fame had increased as one of the England squad's 'WAGs' during the World Cup of that year in Germany.
The pair's marriage was rocked by allegations of infidelity on Ashley Cole's part in January 2008 before a string of tabloid claims in the last fortnight left the couple's union in jeopardy.
As well as separating from his wife, Ashley Cole is believed to be in line to face disciplinary action from his club Chelsea. While his team-mate John Terry is also reported to have been unfaithful from his wife, Cole's alleged infidelities are thought to have angered club officials as they may have occurred when he was 'on duty' while touring with the Blues.
Cheryl Cole's recent performance of her number one single Fight For This Love at the Brit awards came in the midst of the latest tabloid claims about her estranged husband.
