Chelsea won the Community Shield on penalties in an entertaining game against Manchester United at Wembley.
United's Wayne Rooney had forced the game into spot-kicks after his extra-time equaliser brought the scores level at 2-2.
However, it was Carlo Ancelotti's team who emerged victorious after Petr Cech saved the penalties of Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra, with Salomon Kalou scoring the winning penalty for Chelsea.
United had taken an early lead in the game thanks to a cracking strike from Nani. The midfielder cut in from his left wing before smashing the ball into the net past a diving Petr Cech, who should probably have done better.
Chelsea though then pulled two goals back in quick succession in the second half.
Ricardo Carvalho headed into an empty net after United's keeper Ben Foster came out to collect a cross but succeeded in only knocking the ball into the Chelsea player's path.
And ten minutes later Chelsea took the lead courtesy of a Frank Lampard strike.
The goal came in controversial circumstances, with United convinced they should have won a free kick after Michael Ballack collided with Evra in open play.
Despite United player's demonstrations, the referee waved play on and Didier Drogba squared to an unmarked Lampard who scored to give Chelsea the lead.
The game seemed to be Chelsea's from then on in, but a mazy run from Giggs sent Rooney though the middle in a counter attack move which saw the England striker finish smartly past Cech.
Chelsea did, however, eventually wrap up the victory shortly afterwards following a number of poor penalties by United and Lampard, Ballack, Dogba and Kalou all scoring.
