Chelsea have refuted claims that Brazilian defender Alex has handed in a transfer request and could leave in January.
The 26-year-old was quoted in the Sun newspaper as saying he was frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities and had informed Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari of his wish to leave.
Italian giants AC Milan and Spanish outfit Sevilla are thought to have already expressed an interest in Alex, but Chelsea insisted today that they have not received a transfer request from the player.
"Chelsea would like to make clear that no transfer request has been received from any player. Chelsea will decide the future of any contracted player in the best interests of the club," the club said in a statement.
Alex signed for Chelsea in 2004 before spending three seasons on loan at PSV Eindhoven due to work permit problems. The defender won three Dutch titles in his three seasons at PSV and also helped the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The Brazilian international was granted a work permit in 2007 and moved to Stamford Bridge. But he has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at the club and has only made 12 appearances this season.
